Mother of pearl is known internationally under the name of “Nacre”, a term that derives from the Arabic word “naqqarah”, which means shell or conch.
It was Queen Elizabeth I who gave the name “Mother of Pearl” to this shiny material, already known in 3,000 BC to embellish jewelry and objects, in the 16th century. The name also alludes to the fact that shells are, so to speak, the “mothers” of pearls.
Mother of Pearl has been used for many centuries to make precious jewelry and art objects. In China, they discovered centuries before the birth of Christ that by inserting small figures of saints into still-living molluscs, it was possible to quickly find them completely covered in Mother of Pearl. These sculptures represented divinities and, in the hope that they would bring good luck to men, they were brought into religious temples. During the reign of Elizabeth I, the demand for Mother of Pearl grew incredibly and it was used to make all types of jewelry. Even today, Mother of Pearl is much loved, even in the watchmaking industry, as well as for artistic objects, buttons and inlaid decorations. This jewel, forged and inlaid by hand in 925 silver with meticulous embedding work on the entire body, is a pure tribute to this wonderful work of nature: Mother of Pearl itself.
